Influences,
Media, Technique Artist
Judi Maureen White spent her youth on the
Hopi and Navajo Indian reservations of Northern Arizona and New Mexico. She was inspired and deeply influenced by the
vast space and timeless majesty of the land and it's people. After formal
training that included studies in Primitive Art, FiberArt (Traditional and
Contemporary), and Abstract Expressionism, she developed her own abstract
style that is influenced by Wassily Kandinsky, as well as the cave and
kiva paintings of the Primitives. Encouraged through reading Kandinsky's
book, Concerning The Spiritual In Art she began to break new
aesthetic ground in a body of work titled "Spirit Renaissance
Series" that drew it's inspiration from the pathways dictated by her
inner spirit. Combining painting and fiber materials and techniques, she
proceeded
to create complex constructions that are brightly colored, textured
wall pieces that suggest flight and a breaking away from past aesthetic hindrances. Progressing from the traditional rectangular stretched canvas, she began to break them into abstract symbolic shapes. Using both handwoven (woven by the artist) and commercial fabrics stretched over wooden forms (built by the artist), she proceeds to paint (airbrush, sponge, brushing thin layers of acrylic paint on the very lightly primed canvas. Fabric dyes are painted on hand felted ramie and flax shapes that the artist overlays on portions of the canvas to create textured areas on the work. Embellishment of the imagery, creating a rich reflective surface upon close inspection, is accomplished by the use of stitching with rayon and silk yarn, adding beads, studs, electronic semi-conductor parts, feathers, lame and satin piping and gold leaf to portions of each abstract construction. Rich color combinations that are applied (acrylic paint) and penetrate through (dyes) the fabric surface, combine to enhance the seductive quality of the work for the viewer. The
artwork of Judi Maureen White is both a combination and juxtaposition of
the values and cultures that have affected her life. |
